Links without a readable name

Message shown by axe and Lighthouse: Links must have discernible text · link-name · WCAG 2.4.4, 4.1.2

What it means and why it matters

Icon links (cart, social, logo) without text are announced only as "link". Users can't know where they lead (WCAG 2.4.4, 4.1.2).

How to fix it

Add visible text or an aria-label, e.g. aria-label="Shopping cart". For image links, give the image a meaningful alt text.

Code example

Before

<a href="/cart"><svg class="icon-cart"></svg></a>

After

<a href="/cart" aria-label="Shopping cart (2 items)"><svg class="icon-cart" aria-hidden="true"></svg></a>
