WCAG 2.2 checklist for websites and online shops
The European Accessibility Act refers to the harmonised standard EN 301 549, which builds on WCAG. This checklist covers what matters most for online shops and digital services — and shows which items EAA Watch checks automatically.
Images and media
- Every informative image has a meaningful alternative text; decorative images have an empty alt.
- Icons and SVG graphics that carry meaning have a text alternative.
- Videos have captions; audio-only content has a transcript.
- Audio does not play automatically, or it can be paused.
Text and colour
- Text has a contrast of at least 4.5:1 (large text 3:1).
- Buttons, form field borders and important icons have at least 3:1 contrast.
- Information is not conveyed by colour alone (required fields, sale prices, errors).
- The page can be zoomed to 200 % without losing content; zoom is not disabled.
Structure
- Every page has a language (lang) and a unique, descriptive title.
- Headings form a logical outline (one h1, no skipped levels).
- Lists, tables and page regions use proper HTML markup.
Keyboard and focus
- Every function works with the keyboard alone: menu, filters, cart, checkout.
- The keyboard focus is always clearly visible.
- There are no keyboard traps in pop-ups, chat widgets or cookie banners.
- A "skip to content" link or landmarks let users bypass repeated blocks.
- The focused element is not hidden behind sticky headers or banners.
Forms and checkout
- Every form field has a visible label (placeholders don't count).
- Error messages say what went wrong and how to fix it.
- Name, address and email fields use autocomplete.
- Login and checkout don't require puzzles or memory tests without an alternative.
- Users don't have to re-enter information they already provided.
Links and buttons
- Links and buttons have understandable names, including icon buttons.
- Touch targets are at least 24 × 24 CSS pixels or have enough spacing.
- Drag-and-drop actions have a single-click alternative.
Dynamic content
- Status messages ("added to cart", errors) are announced to screen readers.
- Carousels and animations can be paused; nothing flashes more than three times per second.
- Time limits can be extended or switched off.
This checklist is a practical aid, not legal advice. Automated tools reliably find only part of the problems — use it together with a manual review and, where needed, professional advice.
