Images without alternative text

Message shown by axe and Lighthouse: Images must have alternative text · image-alt · WCAG 1.1.1

What it means and why it matters

Screen readers announce such images as "image" or read the file name. Product photos without alt text make a shop unusable for blind customers (WCAG 1.1.1).

How to fix it

Add a short alt text that describes the image's purpose (e.g. the product name and colour). Decorative images get an empty alt="".

Code example

Before

<img src="/img/jacket-blue.jpg">

After

<img src="/img/jacket-blue.jpg" alt="Rain jacket, navy blue, front view">
<img src="/img/divider.svg" alt="">  <!-- decorative -->
